Newport Beach resident Joseph DiGiulio has advanced to No. 1 in the country in the United States Tennis Assn. boys’ 12 singles rankings.
DiGiulio, 11, has 3,205 tournament points to edge No. 2 Reo Asami of Irvine, who has 3,200.
DiGiulio is also ranked No. 1 in the nation in boys’ 12 doubles. He and his partner, Thomas Pura of Bedford, N.Y., won the USTA boys’ 12 Spring National Championships, completed April 8 in Delray Beach, Fla.
DiGiulio and Pura defeated Stefan Kozlov and Gene Tioutine of Florida in the final, 6-4, 6-4.
He also advanced to the singles semifinals of the same tournament. DiGiulio lost in the semifinals to Roy Lederman of Miami, ranked No. 4 nationally, 6-4, 6-0, but rebounded for a consolation final win over No.7 Jared Hiltzik of Wilmette, Ill., 6-4, 6-2.
DiGiulio also won the USTA National Open event in February, defeating No. 10-ranked Stefan Menichella of Santa Barbara in the final, 6-1, 6-3.
DiGiulio, who won’t turn 12 until June, trains at the Advantage Tennis Academy of Irvine.
