May-Treanor adds title
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Misty May-Treanor, who starred at Newport Harbor High, teamed with partner Kerri Walsh to win the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals’ Glendale Open Sunday.
May-Treanor’s No. 1-seeded team defeated Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder, 18-21, 21-17, 15-9, in the final to earn the $20,000 first prize. It was the third straight AVP title for May-Treanor and Walsh, who have now won 10 of the last 11 AVP events.
Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and partner Sean Rosenthal, the No. 3 seeded team, made it to the men’s final Sunday. They were defeated, 21-15, 15-21, 15-9, by top-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.
Gibb and his partner split the $15,000 runner-up prize.
April Ross, another Newport Harbor product (women’s) and Costa Mesa resident Mike Lambert (men’s) finished tied for seventh in the event. They both split $4,640 with their partners.
Estancia High alumnus Matt Fuerbringer finished tied for ninth in the men’s tournament.
May-Treanor led all women’s players with a .511 hitting percentage in the tournament. She had 106 kills in 182 attempts. Walsh was second with a .489 hitting percentage. She had 56 kills.
Gibb had 40 blocks in 17 games (2.35 per game) to lead all men’s players in the tournament.
The AVP tour continues with the Hermosa Beach Open, scheduled Friday through Sunday.
Gibb and Rosenthal are the only team to make all four men’s finals this season, but they have lost all four, three to Dalhausser and Rogers.
