Sage Hill 12, San Gabriel 6NEWPORT BEACH — Lightning Coach A.G. Longoria said his team delivered its best performance of the season that led to a victory in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs Saturday at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Sage Hill (12-11) won eight of nine doubles sets to advance to the quarterfinals for the fifth straight year. The Lightning will play at top-seeded Viewpoint of Calabasas, a 17-1 winner over Silverado, on Tuesday. Viewpoint is the CIF Division IV defending champion.

“We lost to them 12-6 in our Lightning Invitational,” Longoria said. “ We have a different doubles lineup. I don’t know if we can win, but I know we can do better.”

Doubles -- Wang-Fletcher (SH) def. Chong-Dice, 7-5, def. Chuna-Huang, 6-0, def. Pham-Diep, 6-0; Astorino-Gerdau (SH) won, 6-3, lost, 3-6, won, 7-6 (12-10); Wee-Yun (SH) won 6-0, 6-1, 7-5.

St. Margaret’s 13, Estancia 5SAN CLEMENTE — Bradley Fisher and Danny O’Neil each won twice in singles, as the Eagles ended their season with a loss to the No. 2 seed in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs Saturday at Ranch San Clemente Tennis Center.

Chris Koreerat and Nick Oliver, Estancia’s No. 2 doubles team, recorded the Eagles’ lone win in doubles. Estancia, the Orange Coast League champion, ended its season at 14-6.

TRACK AND FIELD

CIF Southern Section Division IV preliminariesCARPINTERIA — Two girls, two boys and a boys 1,600 relay team qualified for the CIF finals after their performances at Carpinteria High Saturday.

Mackenzie Muhonen qualified in two events, breaking her own school record in the long jump to grab the eighth seed (16 feet, 8 inches). She also qualified ninth in the pole vault (8-6). Cait Williamson qualified sixth in the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes, 18.65 seconds, breaking her own school record.

On the boys’ side, Tyler Ellis qualified eighth in the 400 in 51.76 seconds, a personal best. Sean McElroy qualified sixth in the 3,200 in 9:54.07, a school record. The 4x400 team of Kevin Lipman, Brian Sun, Connor Rose and Ellis will be seeded ninth with a time of 3:35.65.

SWIMMING

CIF Southern SectionLONG BEACH — Estancia High junior Shea Kopp finished fourth in the championship final of the girls’ 100-yard backstroke Saturday at Belmont Plaza.

Division II finals

Kopp’s time of 58.83 seconds was a personal best.
