COMMUNITY & CLUBS:Auxiliary selects girls for state conference

The American Legion Auxiliary has selected delegates and alternates to attend this year’s Girls State Conference at Cal State Fresno from July 1 to July 7.

The girls were recently honored at a district luncheon and will be the featured guests at the Auxiliary business meeting on May 16.

Selected were Chloe Rome and Allie Cremo, Corona del Mar High School; Talhia Nunez, Costa Mesa High School; Olivia Schow, Estancia High School; MacKenzie Edwards and Sarah Chai, Irvine High School; Catherine Storch, Newport Harbor High School; Christina Chen and Claire Kim, Northwood High School; Shiri Yadlin and Ella Fishman, Woodbridge High School.

These outstanding young women are in the top of their class scholastically and are involved in numerous extracurricular and community activities, said Cynthia Culp, auxiliary member.

The auxiliary invests about $400 per student in their weeklong summer experience.

DARFUR AND HOW TO HELP

“The Genocide in Darfur: What Can People of Faith Do?” will be the subject of the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Council’s meeting on Wednesday at Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church, according to Greg Kelley, the council’s program chairman.

Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church is at 1259 Victoria St., Costa Mesa. Reception begins at 11:45 a.m., lunch is served at 12:10 p.m., and the program starts at 12:40 p.m. with adjournment by 1:30 p.m.

KIWANIS GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa’s fifth annual golf tournament will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 17 at the Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course, Chairman Charlie Markel said.

Tournament profits will help support the Harbor Area Boys and Girls Club, Markel said. The $100 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, a power cart and range balls. The format is a four-person shamble.
