State community college championshipsAPTOS — Orange Coast College sophomore Jaleh Mazaheri defeated two familiar rivals to win the singles crown Saturday at Cabrillo College.

Mazaheri defeated Katherine Chavez of El Camino, 6-2, 6-2, in the final. The win allowed Mazaheri, who will continue her career at Concordia University in Irvine, OCC Coach Janice Maran said, to even her season record against Chavez at 2-2.

Mazaheri, 26-2 this season, defeated Saddleback’s Erina Hung in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2. It was the fifth time they have met this season and Mazaheri won all five.

Mazaheri, playing with doubles partner Heather Morton, a freshman out of Estancia High, lost to Alex Harris and Jessica Seimens of Sierra College, 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinals Saturday.

Texas 4, UC Irvine 0LOS ANGELES — The Anteaters’ first trip to the NCAA Championship ended abruptly with a first-round loss to Texas Saturday at USC.

The Anteaters (21-5), ranked No. 34, were handled by the No. 30 Longhorns, who clinched before three matches could be finished.

UCI’s No. 1 doubles team of Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin were leading Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic, 6-4, before their match was halted when the outcome of the match was decided.

UCI singles players Inna Agababian (No. 2), Fermin (No. 3) and Jessica Broadfoot (No. 4) all won one of two sets completed against their opponents, but the match was decided, before their individual matches were concluded, so they were halted without finishing.

Texas improved to 16-9 and will advance to the second round of the 64-team tournament, to be contested Sunday.

NCAA West RegionalST. GEORGE, Utah — UC Irvine tied for fifth in the 54-hole event that concluded Saturday at Entrada at Snow Canyon.

With its top-eight regional finish, Coach Julie Brooks’ Anteaters advance to the NCAA Championship at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., May 22-25.

This will be the program’s second trip to the NCAA Championship in the six-year existence of the sport at UCI. The Anteaters finished 18th at the 2005 NCAA Finals.

UCI and BYU each shot 898, behind Oklahoma State and Stanford (tied for first, 874), Arizona State (876) and Denver (891).

UCI junior Kim Lorenzana finished 19th with a three-round score of 224 (74-73-77) on the par-71, 6,234-yard course. Freshman Henna Cho was 28th at 226 (77-77-72), freshman Patty Chawalitmetha was 34th at 227 (72-78-77), junior Selaneé Henderson was 37th at 228 (73-80-75) and junior Jane Chin finished 63rd at 236 (76-74-86).

Pernilla Lindberg of Oklahoma State was medalist with a seven-under total of 206 (68-68-70).

TRACK AND FIELD

Big West Conference championshipsNORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine posted a number of runner-up finishes Saturday at Cal State Northridge.

Senior Ricky Barnes was second in the 1,500 meters (three minutes, 42.57 seconds) and the 800 (1:50.93).

Freshman Napoleon Greene was second in the 400 hurdles (52.42) after running an NCAA regional-qualifying time of 52.30 in Friday’s prelims.

Sophomore Lauren Collins finished second in the women’s high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 11 1/4 inches, tying the school record she set earlier this season.

Collins was fourth in the 100 hurdles (13.96) breaking her own school record.

The men’s 400 relay team of of Matt Linder, George Hernandez, Mark Ilarina and Gerald Hinkle was second (41.00).

Sophomore Oliver Plattner was third in the 400 in 47.53, and fifth in the 200 in 21.70.

Freshman Alisha Misiata set the school record in the shot put as she placed fourth with a mark of 47-10. She broke Laura Mills’ record of 47-8 set in 1986. Misiata finished seventh in the discus throw (141-1), while teammate Amber Sangster was eighth (140-6).

Greene placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.15.

The 1,600 relay of Storm Huie, Tim Murphy, Hernandez and Plattner was fifth in 3:13.66.

Senior Peter Gonzalez was sixth in the triple jump (47-10).

Junior Candice Proctor was seventh in the 5,000 in 17:35.38, junior Sara Mickelson was eighth (17:43.73) and junior Laura Olvera ninth (17:50.76).

Junior Elaine Gillespie was eighth in the 1,500 in 4:42.49 while the 400 relay of Kristen Silverman, Sharitie Williams, Orlisha Henlon and Nicole Dickerson finished fourth (47.95).

The 1,600 relay of Henlon, Collins, Samantha Costantini and Dickerson was sixth (3:49.42).

The UCI men’s team finished sixth with 96 point, while the women’s team was seventh with 59 points.

Northridge swept the men’s and women’s team titles.
