Is that mom on stage?

As a new mother, Huntington Beach musician Adrina Thorpe is taking a brief break from her career to focus on her 8-month-old daughter, though she has written dozens of personalized lullabies for her baby and occasionally uses time between naps for in-home recording.

But Thorpe — whose sound is influenced by the likes of Sarah McLachlan and Dido — is committed to continuing her profession well into motherhood and will take the stage on Saturday at the Mamapalooza Rocks the OC festival, joining several other musicians, comedians and miscellaneous “talented Moms” to celebrate their passion for the arts.

“I think it’s awesome they have this event to support women, because some people act like if you’re a mom, it’s all downhill from here,” she said. “But that’s not true at all. You can have a wonderful home life and be able to do what you love.”

Ren Stewart, also of Huntington Beach, has learned that lesson well, and will join Thorpe as one of the Mamapalooza performers.

Though Stewart is busier than ever as a single mother to her 6-year-old son, Ethan, and a high school photography and digital animation teacher, she continues to make time for her eponymous band, adding that her busy life makes for more meaningful art.

“I think having more life experiences makes for a more well-rounded approach to music, and really, a deeper understanding of things in general,” said Stewart, whose first job as a composer was with Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo.

Mothers like Thorpe and Stewart are what inspired Irvine resident Janeane Bernstein to organize the Mamapalooza event, hoping to encourage other mothers and their families to make the time to pursue their dreams, like the performers have done, just in time for Mother’s Day.

“Moms are the ultimate multitaskers, and to know they are out there making music, juggling work and being moms is amazing,” Bernstein said. “I think people will be inspired by watching the performances, especially the kids coming out to see their own moms.”

But Orange County mothers won’t be the only one’s rocking out this month, with more than 40 Mamapalooza events scheduled throughout the country.

Joy Rose, a mother of four and the lead singer of Housewives on Prozac, hosted the first Mamapalooza concert with nine performers in New York City in 2002. Five years later, hundreds of artistic mothers are involved in the organization.

“I realized there were all these mothers wanting to make the planet better, brighter, more noisy and more fabulous, and they needed a place to do it and a stage to rock on,” Rose said. “It has really taken off, and now I have no time to do anything else.”

All proceeds from Mamapalooza Rocks the OC and similar events will support the recently formed Motherhood Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing and supporting mothers in the arts, as well as establishing a Museum of Motherhood, slated for 2011.

In addition to several musical and comedic performances, Saturday’s event will include children’s crafts, jewelry making, food sampling and a raffle, with a Daisy Rock guitar as the grand prize.
