FBI viewing couple’s papers

Joni and Kevin Park, who were killed in police-involved shootings at the Montage Resort on April 22, are being investigated by the FBI for possible real estate fraud, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller has confirmed.

Kevin Park owned a real estate company called Pacific Park Properties, operated out of his Mission Viejo home. His wife, Joni, was a salesperson for the business.

The Parks’ documents and electronics recovered at the scene of the shootings by Laguna Beach Police were turned over to the FBI to aid in their investigation, Laguna Beach Police Sgt. Jason Kravetz said Wednesday.

Kravetz described the Parks as “persons of interest” and said the FBI had requested that any “records or technology items taken into evidence by this agency be released to their custody for investigative purposes.”

Kravetz added that, “In an effort to fully cooperate with federal investigators, all of the above-mentioned items were turned over to them.”

Kravetz said that the FBI is not looking into the shooting incident, which is under investigation by the Orange County District Attorney’s office.

Eimiller said the Parks aren’t under a full-fledged investigation at this time, but the agency has reason to suspect the couple may have been involved in fraud.

Eimiller added that if the Parks were involved in real estate fraud, the case may go beyond them, hence the investigation.

“They’re deceased, so there’s nothing we can do about that, but we’ll venture to determine whether it’s broader than that and anyone else is involved,” Eimiller said.
