Newport teen, unable to sail away, is arrested

A Newport Beach teen was arrested Saturday morning on suspicion of grand theft after he was observed trying to steal a small sailboat, according to police.

Shortly before 7 a.m., police were called to the 400 block of Via Lido Soud where the 17-year-old boy had put the 13-foot boat into the water. The boy was trying to get the sail up, but was unable to when police arrived, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Evan Sailor said. The boy was released to his parents a few hours after he was arrested, Sailor said.

Newport man accused of kidnapping

A Newport Beach resident was ineligible for bail at Orange County Jail on Saturday evening after being arrested earlier in the day by Newport Beach police on suspicion of kidnapping and sexual assault, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Evan Sailor said.

Kaiewa John Keawe, 29, was arrested around 4:30 a.m. Saturday after police received a call from the Keawe’s girlfriend, who said she had left a residence in the 1000 block of West Bay Avenue, where she said Keawe held her against her will and sexually assaulted her.

Police responded to West Bay Avenue and arrested Keawe.

Alleged attempt to steal bike leads to arrest

A Costa Mesa man was arrested Friday night on suspicion of attempted robbery and causing damage to a telecommunications device, both felonies, according to police.

Mike Galicia, 29, reportedly confronted a man on a bike in the 500 block of West 19th Street around 7:20 p.m. Friday, pushing him and trying to take his bike, Lt. Dale Birney said. But, Birney said, Galicia wasn’t able to take the bike, and when the rider took out his cellphone to call police, Galicia reportedly threw the phone, Birney said.

Galicia was found in the same block of West 19th Street and arrested shortly after 8 p.m., according to police records.

Galicia was being held at Costa Mesa Jail on Saturday evening on $100,000 bail.
