Edison gets on winning track
Edison picked up its first win in Sunset League play by running past visiting Marina, 97-75.
The Chargers shot out to a 25-11 lead after one quarter and were up 49-33 at the half. They went on to hold the Vikings to their lowest three-point basket — allowing just seven — of the season.
Freshman guard Kyle Boswell hit a game-high four three-pointers and finished with 27 points, junior forward Carl Eberts scored 21 points and senior forward Derek Moriyama had 16 to lead Edison on offense.
Marina senior guard Garrett James led all scorers with 30 points. Senior forward Troy Lewis scored 12.
El Toro used a big second half to pull away to a 73-45 victory over visiting Huntington Beach in Sea View League action. Junior guard Nick Becker scored 15 points and sophomore guard Nick Nesser scored 11 for the Oilers, who were outscored by 20 points in the second half.
In a previous league outing, Huntington dropped a 75-68 home game to Northwood. Becker led all scorers with 30 points and sophomore guard Zachary Kimber scored 17.
Ocean View opened up Golden West League play with a 65-40 rout of host Segerstrom. Freshman guard Avery Johnson scored a game-high 24 points and had eight rebounds for the Seahawks.
In girls’ basketball
Ocean View began defense of its Golden West League title with a pair of victories, the latest a come-from-behind, 52-49 home win over Saddleback. Senior center DJ Butler scored 25 points and junior forward Clarissa Holz had 11 points for the Seahawks.
Edison picked up its third Sunset League win in as many games with a 38-26 victory over host Marina. Senior guard Simone Ibbotson hit three, three-point shots to finish with 15 points and added eight rebounds to lead the Chargers. Sophomore forward Rita Sitivi’s 10 points paced Marina.
Edison also was a 44-36 winner over visiting Los Alamitos. Sophomore forward Mary Madden topped the Chargers with nine points.
Huntington stayed undefeated in Sea View League play with a 52-30 rout of host El Toro. Junior center Jasmine Erving scored 19 points and sophomore guard Noe Viloria had 17 points and six assists for the Oilers.
In a previous league game, Erving hit two free throws in the final second to lift the Oilers to a 51-50 win over visiting Northwood. Erving’s outstanding performance included 28 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Viloria had 10 points and eight assists, and senior forward Rebecca Murray had nine rebounds.
In girls’ soccer
Edison shut out Los Alamitos, 1-0, in Sunset League play. The Chargers scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game midway through the first half, when a pass from freshman Alison Hensley set up a goal by sophomore Alexa Enlow.
Goalie Keenan Castillo made five saves in the second half for the Chargers.
In girls’ water polo
Freshman Danielle Warde scored in the final two minutes to break a tie and give Edison an 8-7 Sunset League victory over Esperanza at the Newport Harbor High pool.
The teams were tied at 4-4 at the half before Edison shut down Esperanza in the third quarter to take a 7-4 lead, but the Aztecs fought back to tie the score one last time at 7-7.
“I think we might have gotten a little overconfident after the third quarter,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “We eased up and it cost us. Fortunately, we were able to hang on to win the game.”
Sophomore Monique Wilson turned in a strong performance for the Chargers with four goals, two steals and two assists. Warde scored two goals to go along with two assists and two steals. Junior Jamie Bee had three steals and scored once, senior Joanna Tiplea scored a goal and senior goalie Amelia Huss had 12 saves.
