Irvine stumbles across Icebergs
The AYSO Region 57 girls under-12 Icebergs defeated the Irvine Spit
Fire, 4-0, Dec. 15 to clinch the regional soccer championship.
Catherine Sullivan led the Icebergs with two goals, while Ava
Soleimany and Michelle Brescia had one each. Nica Sabouni stopped
numerous offensive attacks by the Spit Fire.
Anna Scott, Baret Yahn, Brook Braga, Cristina Page, Taylor Lipman
and Alexis Meruelo led the defense for the Icebergs while Eli Nadal,
Katelyn Baker and Jessica Beyer controlled the midfield.
In AYSO Region 120 girls under-13 play:
* The Costa Mesa Spirit defeated South Irvine, Lake Forest, Rancho
Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo to win the Area Q tournament Dec.
18-19.The third-seeded Spirit defeated top-seeded Mission Viejo in
the tournament final. Gabby Chavez, Allyson Wallace, Amanda Watson,
Misha Brown helped hold the game to a scoreless tie before the Spirit
were awarded a penalty kick with just minutes remaining. Jennifer
Johnston was called up from her sweeper position to kick the
tournament-winning goal.
The Spirit easily handled South Irvine and Lake Forest with goals
from Kendra Fisher, Teagan La Bare, Erin Rodman, Wallace and Jillian
Beck. Forwards Hillary Williams and Amy Ramirez provided added
pressure.
Watson scored the game-winner with four minutes left.
In Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball action Dec. 20:
* The Storm defeated the Celtics, 22-18.
Duran Sharp scored 14 points and Gabby Rapp scored four to lead
the Storm. Saylor Schroff led the Celtics with 10 points, while Angelique Plecas scored four.
* Spirit 25, Rim Rattlers 15
Sylvie Reynolds scored a season-high 18 points to lead the Spirit
(3-0) over the Rim Rattlers. Aysia Andry led the Rattlers with five
points, while teammates Taylor Stefano and Amanda Parrill scored five
and four points, respectively.
* Epics 18, Mustangs 16
Megan Zwerling, Taylor Lippman and Brittany Brown each scored four
points for the Epics. Sarah Bard and Beth Powell scored six and four
points, respectively, for the Mustangs.
* Wango Tango 18, Aqua Nets 17 Guards Marissa Hergott and Taliah Shrikian each scored nine points
to lead the Wango Tango. Ava Sloeimany (six points) and Niki Borc
(five points) led the Nets.
