Jillian Braverman is hoping to duplicate the success she earned last

summer when, as a 13-year-old, she won the girls 16s singles

championship in the Balboa Bay Racquet Club junior tennis tournament,

also known as the War by the Shore.

This year, Braverman, who will be a sophomore at Corona del Mar

High in the fall, is the No. 2 seed in girls 18s singles. She is one

of many locals who will be competing in the 15th annual tournament

that starts today at the Balboa Bay Racquet Club.

Newport Beach’s Bonnie Adams and Vanessa Dunlap are the No. 1 seed

in girls 18s doubles. Adams and Dunlap, Newport Harbor products, will

be known as defending champions, as they won the girls 18s doubles

title last summer.

Melissa Matsuoka is seeded No. 7 in the girls 12s singles and

Hailey Hogan is seeded No. 8. Both hail from Newport Beach and have

byes in the first round. Matsouka and her partner Hayley Miller are

the top seed in girls 12s doubles.

In the girls 14 singles, Costa Mesa resident Eleanor Edles is

seeded No. 10 and begins play on Tuesday. Cierra Gaytan-Leach, a

Corona del Mar Junior High student, is also competing in girls 14s.

She reached the final in girls 12s singles in the 102nd Southern

California Tennis Association junior sectional championships July 2.

Edles and Alexandra McIntosh are the No. 2 seed in girls 14s

doubles and will play the tandem of Whitney Griffith of Newport Beach

and Anne Russell of Corona del Mar in the quarterfinal round on

Wednesday.

Carly Adams, who will be a junior at Newport Harbor in the fall,

will play Jessica Winkler in the round of 32 on Tuesday for an

all-Newport Beach matchup in the girls 16s singles.

Corona del Mar’s John Leonard will play Alexander Grosek from

Costa Mesa today at 12:30 p.m. in the round of 64 in the boys 14s

singles.

Brent Pham from Newport Coast is seeded No. 11 in boys 14s singles

and has a first-round bye.

Newport Beach resident Joseph Di Giulio is seeded No. 3, Charlie

Corum from Costa Mesa is No. 5, and Newport Beach’s Connor Curry is

No. 6 in the boys 12 singles. Also in boys 12s singles, Erik

Heimstaedt from Newport Beach and Hayden Tremper from Corona del Mar

Di Giulio reached the final in the boys 10s as an 8-year-old last

summer. This year, he is seeking a championship in the 12s. He won

the boys 10s singles title in the SCTA junior sectional championships

July 2, when he scored a thrilling 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 victory over

Alexios Halebian in a three-hour final match.

Boys 10s singles No. 5 seed Troy Arnold hails from Newport Beach

and has a first-round bye.
