It’s pretty much a safe bet that any sort of geometric pattern is
going to make an eye-catching photo. Humans can’t help it. We’re
forced to notice or pay attention to patterns that at some point in
human evolution were for our survival. Only an anthropologist could
tell you exactly why, but designers, architects, landscapers, the
Scottish and photographers have capitalized on this human trait by
using patterns in their work to draw attention. What makes Kent
Treptow’s photo work journalistically is the inclusion of the perfect
human element for this scenario -- the gardener. The mess of
trimmings around one of the hedges to break-up the pattern is just
enough to tell a little story. A gardener trimming the hedges wasn’t
the big news of the day, but it shows how a humdrum task can hold our
attention.
