Sandpiper, Mesa Verde Partners take titles
Play in the City of Laguna Beach Men’s Summer 16 Slow Pitch
Softball Program culminated with the end of the regular season last
week and when the dust had settled, Sandpiper and Mesa Verde Partners
emerged as division title holders.
Sandpiper claimed the Tuesday League regular season championship
banner by defeating Used Cars, 6-3.
Mesa Verde Partners took the regular season crown in Wednesday
League play by defeating Sofa Kings, 8-5.
In Tuesday League action:
Sandpiper 6, Used Cars 3
Chris Howell not only recorded the pitching win, but also went
three for three from the plate to pace Sandpiper.
Joel Bushong and Bill Reimer each collected two RBI to support
Howell.
Mike McKenzie led Used Cars’ 11-hit attack with a home run that
cleared the scoreboard in centerfield and landed on the access road
behind Riddle Field. McKenzie finished the game three for four.
Bob Woodruff and Mike Cooper each had two hits for Used Cars,
which is seeded sixth in the upcoming postseason playoffs.
Good, Bad an Ugly 6, Ganahl Lumber 5
Tom Blemis’ three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning
tied the score at 5-5, and Good, Bad and Ugly got the win in the
eighth inning on John Mallet’s solo home run.
The victory clinched a No. 5 seeding for Good, Bad and Ugly in
postseason play.
Ganahl Lumber, the No. 2 seed, had opened up a 5-2 lead behind the
pitching of John Campbell, Steve Dixon’s two hits and a pair of RBI
by Mark Judy.
Island Shade 5, Rotary 2
Island Shade wrapped up the No. 4 seed as Chuck Emanuele accounted
for three runs behind two home runs, Tom Taylor hit a two-run homer
and Bruce Aguinaldo recorded the pitching win.
Rotary, the No. 3 seed, received two hits from Dave Zoog and a
strong pitching performance from Mark Maurer.

Island Shade, 5-4; 5. Good, Bad and Ugly, 6. Used Cars, 3-5; 7. Team

In Wednesday League action:
Mesa Verde Partners 8, Sofa Kings 5
Scott Henderson delivered a pair of home runs and Tommy Neptune
hit a three-run homer to power Mesa Verde Partners.
The Sofa Kings, the No. 4 seed in the postseason playoffs, were
led by Marco Johnson who homered in a two for three game that
included two RBI.

This tie game between the two teams was halted due to curfew and
time limitations.
Mitch Kruger went three for five with a three-run home run and
J.P. McMurray also went 3 for 5 for second-seeded Sports World.
Courtesy Auto Body, the No. 3 seed, got a four for four
performance from Chuck Maretzky and Mike McKenzie hit a two-run home
run in the first inning of play.
Forty Majority 5, Hobies 3
In the final game of the summer for two teams not bound for the
postseason, Forty Majority recorded its first and only win of the
season.
