Laguna boys’ open season with two wins

The Laguna Beach Eighth-Grade All-Net boys’ basketball team began
the 2002 National Junior Basketball season on a winning note last
weekend with victories over South Coast and Newport Mesa.
Also last weekend, the Laguna Beach boys’ Soccer Club under-13
team dropped a 3-0 match to Mission Viejo Brazil.
Boys’ NJB
Bobby Monroe and Ian Butters paced the offense and the rebounding
tandem of Monroe and Brian Delano hit the boards hard as Laguna Beach
opened the season last Saturday with a 56-45 win over South Coast.
On Sunday, Laguna Beach coasted past Newport Mesa, 44-24. Monroe
scored from the inside and Delano, Ty Flemming and Chris Hyden added
key baskets from the outside. Butters also hit from long range and
finished with three, three-point baskets.
Laguna Beach returns to the court on Sunday. The Eighth Grade
All-Net team will play Niguel Aliso at 12:45 p.m. at Woodbridge High,
then travel to Santa Margarita High for a 4 p.m. tipoff against
Tustin.
Boys’ Soccer
Mission Viejo Brazil scored three first half goals and made them
stand in a 3-0 victory over Laguna Beach.
Laguna Beach shut down Mission Viejo Brazil in the second half
behind the play of Michael Tachovsky and Charles Moothart.
Laguna Beach, now 1-1, will take on Canyon PSA Saturday at 9 a.m.
at Orange High.
