The Laguna Beach Eighth-Grade All-Net boys’ basketball team began

the 2002 National Junior Basketball season on a winning note last

weekend with victories over South Coast and Newport Mesa.

Also last weekend, the Laguna Beach boys’ Soccer Club under-13

team dropped a 3-0 match to Mission Viejo Brazil.

Boys’ NJB

Bobby Monroe and Ian Butters paced the offense and the rebounding

tandem of Monroe and Brian Delano hit the boards hard as Laguna Beach

opened the season last Saturday with a 56-45 win over South Coast.

On Sunday, Laguna Beach coasted past Newport Mesa, 44-24. Monroe

scored from the inside and Delano, Ty Flemming and Chris Hyden added

key baskets from the outside. Butters also hit from long range and

finished with three, three-point baskets.

Laguna Beach returns to the court on Sunday. The Eighth Grade

All-Net team will play Niguel Aliso at 12:45 p.m. at Woodbridge High,

then travel to Santa Margarita High for a 4 p.m. tipoff against

Tustin.

Boys’ Soccer

Mission Viejo Brazil scored three first half goals and made them

stand in a 3-0 victory over Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach shut down Mission Viejo Brazil in the second half

behind the play of Michael Tachovsky and Charles Moothart.

Laguna Beach, now 1-1, will take on Canyon PSA Saturday at 9 a.m.
