Lightning opens with victory
The Lightning, a girls’ under-17 Silver team, opened it season
last Saturday with a 3-1 victory over San Gabriel Valley in a Coast
Soccer League match played at Pasadena.
Janet Peterson’s first half goal gave the Lightning a 1-1 tie at
the intermission, and second half goals by Lauren Stimmler and
another by Peterson gave the squad the win.
Keeper Gena Johnson and sweeper Danae Lucas anchored the defense
for the Lightning who also received key contributions from Megan
Bell, Tara Fox, Nikki Freiborg, Jill Hribar, Caitlin McGinnis, Hilary
Pohlman, Lindsey Rodgers, Beth Santiago, Samantha Serrano, Courtney
Taniguchi and Krista Thompson.
The Lightning then dropped a 4-l match to Simi Valley but bounced
back to upend Santa Clarita, 3-1.
The Lightning, who tuned up for the regular season by placing
second in the Nike Arsenal Tournament over Labor Day weekend, returns
12 players from the 2001 team.

Bombers 6, Sweet Strikers 1
Emily Walling netted three goals -- including one on the second
play of Saturday’s contest -- to help lead the Bombers past the Sweet
Strikers in under-10 Division play at Gisler School.
Erin Sparno and Nicole Allen each added scores before the
intermission, and Kim Choto completed the Bombers’ scoring with a
goal in the final quarter.

Boys
Ice Breakers 6, Blasters 2
The Blasters scored within the first few minutes of this under-10
Division contest at Perry School, but the Ice Breakers fought back to
win their second game of the young season.
Trevor Verone paced the Ice Breakers’ attack with two goal and an
assist.
Matthew Bordas and Matthew Steinhaus each scored once and had an
assist and Mitchell Phillipy and Michael Rowe each scored once.
Nick Frens and Tommy Vollum assisted on offense, Kane Ordonez and
Cole Souza anchored the defense and Garrett Hickman and Gavin Perdomo
shared goaltending duties with Phillipy and Verone.

Breakaways 4,
Green Geckos 0
Single goals went to Sloan Turner, Nicole Camarrillo, Kyleigh
Kesler and Sara Weismann as the Breakaways improved to 2-0 with their
second shutout victory at Sun View Elementary School.
Christina Thien worked goaltending duties for two quarters and
Weismann and Natalie Ortiz defended the net for one quarter each.

Blue Crush 0
Forward Sloan Turner pushed across two goals and Nicole Camarrillo
scored the other to lead the Breakaways in a season-opening win.
