The Slammin’ Smurfs scored five unanswered goals after the

Bruisers opened up a 1-0 lead and won their boys under-14 Region 97

soccer game Saturday, 5-1.

Ben Swift and Will Reichenstein each scored two goals for the

Bruisers as Andrew Kaban scored on a cross pass from Edgar Torres.

Brandon Rowley, Jordon Hovis, Torres, Christopher Gutierrez and

David Garrett played strong defense, keeping the ball in the Smurf’s

offensive area most of the game as Rex Nelson, Tommy Olson, Phil

Garrett and Kyle Fults took shots on goal. Kyle Caldwell controlled

the midfield, turning back several charges by the Bruisers.

Elsewhere in boys under-14 play:

* The Who 2, Quiksilver 2

Jacob Silverman and Jon Gordon each scored a goal for The Who of

Newport Beach, who played to a tie against Quiksilver of Costa Mesa.

Who goalkeeper Juan Trujillo made seven saves with a steady

defense led by Nick Normandin, Christian Harrison, Michael Perkins

and Vinnie Finn.

Forwards Travis Kuhns and Tobin Olson each had several shots on

goal to keep the pressure on Quiksilver as The Who played the final

half with 10 players after Silverman injured his ankle and did not

return.

In boys under-12 play:

* Patriots 5, Flaming Boo Bears 2

Sparked by Jay Ordaz’ two goals and single goals scored by Chris

O’Campo, Preston Wheeler and Joshua Bowman, the Patriots defeated the

Boo Bears.

O’Campo scored on a penalty kick while Wheeler scored on an assist

from Wil Curiel.

Daron Arnold contributed to the Patriots’ offense as midfield

support was provided by Spencer Baratto, Irving Torres, Peter Nguyen

and Christopher Cowie.

Randall Hause and Tommie Freeman kept the Boo Bears at-bay on

defense with Jay Wilsona and Jackson Carmack playing tough in goal.

* Rebels 3, Hurricanes 0

A first quarter goal and two second-half scores put the Rebels in

the victory chair last weekend.

Hurricanes’ goalkeeper Easton Giedt and defenders Simon Hedrick,

Robby Hampton and J.P. Muller kept the Rebels from scoring more goals

in the second quarter.

The Hurricanes kept the heat on with shots on goal from Christian

Scott and Grady Kough during the second half.

In girls under-10 action:

* Blue Angels 5, Breakers 1

For the second game in a row, Blakeley Ficenec scored three times,

this time leading the Blue Angels in their defeat of the Breakers as

the Blue Angels broke a 1-1 tie midway through the first half before

Beth Barnard put the Blue Angels ahead to stay with a goal, her third

of the season, after Ficenec scored the first goal.

Josie Jogwe rounded out the scoring with a solo goal early in the

fourth quarter, keeping the pressure on with seven shots on goal

during the second half.

* Teal Tigers 2, Blue Crush 1

The Teal Tigers came from behind to stop the Blue Crush.

Teal Tiger goals came from Sadye Busby and Addison Richley while

the Blue Crush goal came on a boot from Kiley Johnson.

Makena Owen assisted on Richley’s game-winning goal as stellar

Tiger defense was provided by Mary Yeager, Delany Bell, Britany Stair

and Victoria Meer. Kylee Pochirowski and Tabitha Goff played steady

in goal for the Tigers.

* Bratz 1, Galaxy Girls 0

The Bratz and Galaxy Girls struggled to a 0-0 tie into the fourth

quarter until Claire Castillo broke the tie to give the Bratz the

win.

Standout efforts came from Kelly Kindgren, Courtney McIntosh,

Alexandria Kehoe, Katie Escher, Zoe Sanglerat, Maria Swift and Milena

Bounanoce.

Both Brenna Landstrom and Madeleine Gallardo played solid in goal

for the Bratz.

In girls under-14 action:

* Goldfishies 3, Shockers 2

Led by Teyana Moyer’s two goals, the Goldfishies came back from a

2-0 deficit to edge the Shockers Saturday.

Nikki Liddicote assisted on both of Moyer’s goals as the

Goldfishies defense rallied behind Karli Kuhns and Shaina Griffing

and a penalty kick from Taren Seimonsma.

In boys under-10 play:

* Killer Bees 3, Fighting Ninjas 2

Timmy Root scored all three goals for the Killer Bees in the win

as the Bees took an early lead over the Fighting Ninjas.

Taylor Wildman scored two goals for the Ninjas as Matthew

Buchanan, Cody Caldwell and James Jarvis all combined on several

scoring attacks.

Zach Buie had a shot on goal with Dustin Ayres and Ryan Ridley

playing strong defense.

* Blue Bombers 6, Volcanoes 0

Anchored by solid goaltending and opportunistic scoring, the Blue

Bombers shut out the Volcanoes Saturday.

The Bombers were led by Nolan Mena’s three-goal outburst (one off

a penalty kick), Marco Urquiza’s two goals and David Varona’s one

goal.

Support was provided by Brodi Beal, Jack Murrel, Nicolas Jaber and

Gus Moore.

Bombers’ goalkeeper Ryan Davidson kept the Volcanoes scoreless

while defensive aid came from Kyle Regan, Ethan Murray and Slayter

Stanley.

* Rockets 5, Blue Blasters 1

Caleb Candelaria scored the lone goal for the Blue Blasters, who

were also led offensively by Misha Pakvasa, Paul Tadross, Trey

Franklin and Paul Weisinger.

The Blue Blasters used three goalkeepers, Jake Likich, Candelaria

and Brecht Van’t Hof, to stop the Rockets.

Blue Blaster defense and midfield support were provided by

Candelaria, Corey Fultz, Ryan Shannon, Van’t Hof and C.J. Tona.

In girls under-8 play:

* The Turquoise Dolphins dueled the Blue Water Dolphins Saturday.

The Turquoise Dolphins were led offensively by Brimley Simonsma

and Sydney Dexter with great defense by Samantha Defai.

Page Keys and Kristine Saunders played a strong offense for the

Blue Water Dolphins, and defender Kari Hancock excelled.

Both the Zooming Zebras and the Tigers played inspired soccer.

Sara Hamilton and Sara Daly played strong defense for the Zebras.

In boys under-8 action:

* Players on the Spitfire and the Green Fireballs made several

shots on goal as each team played well. One shot hit the post and

caromed back into play.

The Green Fireballs played tight defense as Efe Atli, who had

returned from Turkey on a 17-hour flight had a shot on goal.

In boys under-7 play:

* The Laser Dragons and Fireballs faced-off against one another

Saturday and came out firing.

Fireball players Daniel O’Toole, Cameron Hall, Mario Nark, Nick

Roman and Mark Gehlke all scored for the Fireballs, who received

stellar defensive play from Brooks O’Head, who made a stomach block,

along with Marcell DeBarros, Mitchell Mendoza, Kody Wensley and Nick

Huntley.

The Laser Dragons were led in scoring by Shaun Vetrovec with

assists from Peter Kwok, Joey Gregory and Brandon Beck.

The trio of Cole Chapin, Garrett Byers and Jack Williamson made

numerous saves in goal as Rian Atherton and Ian MacInnis anchored the

defense.

* The Cheetahs and Blue Fireballs dueled at Newport Heights

Elementary Saturday.

Cheetah goals came from Conner Tamblyn and Emmanuel Jogwe with

Montgomery Faigen almost scoring.

Kolby Pearson, Andy Nichols, Mert Kocyigit and Robert Lyons played

great offensively and defensively.

In boys under-6 action:

* The Green Hornets, coached by Joe Bockrath, tamed the Tornadoes

on the shoulders of Ben Bockrath and his five goals as Blake Jessen

fired another ball into the net with a sweeping kick in the fourth

quarter.

Tyler Fowler scored three goals to lead the Firestorm as they

fought the Stingers at Newport Harbor High.

In girls under-6 action:

* An active Green Girlillas team continued their scoring streak

and teamwork as Libby Knight tallied two goals to bring her

team-leading season total to six as Peyton Espley-Jones added another

goal (her third on the year).

Jaynie Hexberg and Haley Heesch chased every ball on the field,

helping spark several Girlilla goals, while Lila Mc Elroy and Ashley

Ammerman displayed strong ball-handling skills and speed to keep the

opposing team off-balance.

Aggressive defense was provided by Anna Hancock and Emily High,

who both kept the ball in the offense’s possession much of the game.
