Doubles teams lead Tars
Diana Khoury and A.J. Olson, playing No. 1 doubles for Newport
Harbor High’s girls tennis team, swept all three sets Wednesday in
the Sailors’ 11-7 nonleague victory over host Sunny Hills (1-2).
Newport Harbor’s No. 2 doubles team of Bonnie Adams and Carly
Adams also swept, while losing only four games. The Tars improved to
2-0. They host Capistrano Valley today at 3 p.m. in a nonleague
match.

Newport Harbor 11, Sunny Hills 7 Singles -- McIntosh (NH) lost to Cabanilla, 5-7, def.
Esquevel, 7-5, def. Wong, 6-1; Dunlap (NH) lost 3-6, won 6-2, 6-2;
Sturgess (NH) lost 0-6, 0-6, 4-6.
Doubles -- Khoury-Olson (NH) def. Park-Kamgwanky, 6-4,
def. Lee-Jung, 6-2, def. Chang-Chen, 6-1; B. Adams-C. Adams (NH) won
6-0, 6-1, 6-3; McKay-Kay (NH) won 6-2, lost 2-6, 2-6.

GIRLS TENNIS: Mesa falls, 16-2
Costa Mesa High’s girls tennis team hosted Orange County
powerhouse Foothill in nonleague action Wednesday and the Knights
earned a 16-2 win.
Chi Doan and Minh-Thy Pham, playing No. 1 doubles for Coach Joe
Havens’ Mustangs, and Mesa’s No. 2 tandem of Brenda Tran and Laura
Faif each won a set. The Mustangs (2-2), off to a 2-0 start in their
new league (Golden West), host El Modena today in nonleague play at
3:15 p.m. Foothill improved to 4-0.
NONLEAGUE
Foothill 16, Costa Mesa 2 Singles -- Havens (CM) lost to Sahiney, 4-6, Wallace
(CM) lost to Gilchrist, 2-6, Havens (CM) lost to Duesler, 0-6; K.
Nguyen (CM) lost 0-6, 4-6, 1-6; H. Nguyen (CM) lost 3-6, 0-6,
0-6.
Doubles -- Pham-Doan (CM) lost to Anderson-Gobett, 2-6,
lost to Harris-Wilcox, 2-6, def. Silverman-Carcher, 6-2; Tran-Faif

VOLLEYBALL: Mesa loses, 3-1
The Costa Mesa High girls volleyball team lost its second match of
the season, but was able to steal a game against nonleague visitor
Laguna Hills Wednesday afternoon.Laguna (1-1) won 15-11, 8-15, 15-3,
15-6.
Mesa senior Sharon Day led the Mustangs (0-2) with 11 kills, while
Emily Abbott added nine kills and three service aces. Jenny Sparks
provided 15 assists for Mesa, which returns to action Friday at
Tustin.

JC GOLF: OCC women lose
The Orange Coast College women’s golf team lost to host Golden
West in Orange Empire Conference play at Meadowlark Golf Course in
Huntington Beach (par 71), as the Rustlers’ Lisa Sweller earned
medalist honors with a 79 in her team’s 356-371 win.
Joanne Durocher (86), Marilyn Pope (93), Laura Sumpter (93) and
Diane Valoff (99) scored for the Pirates (3-3), who play the OCC
alumni Monday at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club at noon.
