Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

Led by Brad Wayman’s eight goals, Estancia High defeats Tustin,

14-10, in boys water polo action at Costa Mesa. The All-Pacific Coast

League selection the previous year is helped offensively by Matt

Hoss’s and John Senften’s three-goal outbursts. The Eagles lead 5-2

at halftime as Estancia goalkeeper Bryan Delvilde makes 12 saves.

In a match between two of Orange County’s top three girls tennis

teams, top-ranked Corona del Mar High defeats No. 2 Dana Hills, 10-8,

to go to 3-0. CdM senior Nina Vaughan is the only player to sweep all

three sets. Sophomore Caylan Leslie gives CdM an 8-6 edge after

defeating Summer Tantce in the third round before Dana Hills ties the

match, 8-8. The Sea Kings’ doubles duo of Ruchika Budhraja and

Courtney Tenerelli win two of three doubles sets as Robyn Coleman and

Jenny Meyer, playing No. 2 doubles, pull out a win over Lauren

Richardson and Christin Manning, 7-5, to tie the match, 6-6.

Adam Lee, the captain of the 1996 Long Beach State men’s water

polo team, is named head coach of the Corona del Mar High girls water

polo team replacing John Vargas, who resigns his post with the girls

to focus more attention on the national team, but stays on as the CdM

boys water polo coach.

Estancia High’s Boys Athletic Director Tim Parsel announces that

former NCAA Division III All-American wrestler Nate Skaar is the

Eagles’ new wrestling coach. Skaar is fresh out of Luther College in

Decorah, Iowa, where he capped a career that included three state

titles at Minnesota’s Albert Lea High. Skaar replaces David Jones and

Greg Poole. Skaar says, “My philosophy is that success comes with

good work ethic.�

Newport Harbor’s girls field hockey team evens its season record

at 1-1 after downing Santa Ana, 2-0, in a league contest. Rachele

Marsh finds an open Kyle McNichols to give Newport a 1-0 lead with

just over six minutes expiring in the first half. The Sailors hardly

gave up the ball after that point, as defenders Katie Bourgeois and

Kerstin Manderson save nearly every errant pass. Marsh chips in a

ball about a yard from the net on a pass from Vanessa Shapiro seven

minutes into the second half to give the Sailors a 2-0 edge. Sailor

goalkeeper Erin Kennedy has to make only one save the entire game and

says, “I think we did better than usual today because we wanted to

show the league we can win a game.�

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

Orange Coast College men’s soccer team opens up the season with a

4-2 win over visiting El Camino College after a state championship

season the year before. Four different players score goals for OCC,

as the Pirates outshoot El Camino, 25-8. OCC gets on the board first,

four minutes into the game as OCC fullback Jason Greasley scores on a

pass from Sergio Suarez (Estancia). Gaspar Gutierrez puts OCC ahead,

2-1, at the 32-minute mark, scoring in front of the net on a loose

ball. The Pirates then take a 3-2 lead as Ali Mossadeghi tips in a

loose ball after a miss and sophomore forward P.J. Polowski scores on

a corner kick at the 35-minute mark to give OCC a 4-2 lead and the

win.

Corona del Mar girls volleyball team beats El Modena, 15-3, 15-4,

15-5, in their season opener, as CdM notches 18 of 19 points after

the Vanguards win the first two periods of the match. Lori Newcomer

has five of her match-high 11 kills in Game 2, getting two

back-to-back to push CdM’s advantage to 9-2. Jennifer Stroffe knocks

down six kills in the third game.
