Youth basketball: Newport-Mesa downs Fullerton

The Newport-Mesa seventh grade All-Net squad defeated Fullerton,

45-37, in National Junior Basketball action recently to move into second

place.

Hunt Rychel led Newport-Mesa (5-2) with 12 points. Also chipping in

were Matthew Helfrich (11), Nick Jones (11) and Junior Hernandez (10).

Chad Stassel and Taylor Lobdell contributed with nine assists. David

Holmes, Wes Dunlap and Jarret Daniel were solid on defense.

In more NJB seventh-grade action:

* Riverside 59, Newport-Mesa 50 - Helfrich scored 12 points and had

three assists for Newport-Mesa. Tony Jones (8) and Stassel (7) also

contributed offensively.

Rychel, Holmes and Nick Jones pulled down 25 rebounds. Newport-Mesa

led after three quarters, put couldn’t hold on against Riverside (6-1).

Newport-Mesa travels to Moreno Valley Saturday to play an undefeated

Moreno Valley team.
