Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Estancia High girls basketball team crushes host University,

54-35, as the Eagles use a 34-8 run that covers two quarters to power the

win. Senior shooting guard Vivi Rodriguez scores a game-high 17 points.

Jill Black adds 13 points, four rebounds, two steals and a pair of

assists. Amy Deming and Jennifer McCartin score eight points each.

The Estancia boys basketball team also defeats University, 68-60, as

Sam Nelson scores a career-high 40 points. The 6-foot-5 junior forward

sinks 15 of 23 from the field and knocks down 7 of 14 from the foul line.

He has 14 of the Eagles’ 16 first-quarter points, 12 of their last 21 and

also manages to collect 14 rebounds and two assists. The victory extends

Estancia’s league winning streak to 13.

The Estancia boys soccer team blanks University, 2-0. Armando Quinones

heads in a Ramon Garcia throw-in in the 33rd minute. Cesar Terrones

scores the Eagles’ second goal, finishing a cross from Orlin Ramos.

Junior goalie Brad Wayman comes up with a diving save of Uni’s lone shot

on goal in the 32nd minute.

The Costa Mesa girls basketball squad uses a total team effort to

overcome Aliso Niguel’s one-girl gang, 56-50. Brooke Hyman of Aliso

scores a game-high 23 points, but Costa Mesa has four players in double

figures, including Koo Kim (17 points), Chanel Anderson (10), Chantay

Peyton (10) and Julie Collett (10).

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team gives Estancia quite a

scare, extending the Eagles to overtime. But the Eagles win, 52-48, on

their own floor. Estancia junior Jim Faulkner knocks down a three-pointer

with 24 seconds left to send the game into overtime. He shot bounces off

the rim, skims off the backboard, grazes the rim again and falls in. The

Eagles then outscore the Sea Kings, 6-2, in overtime, by sinking six

straight free throws. CdM juniors Chris Quinn and Todd Merriman score 16

and 10 points, respectively. Matt Fuerbringer leads the Eagles with a

game-high 20 points.

Later in the week, the Sea Kings stun Back Bay rival Newport Harbor,

59-50, in a Sea View League game. CdM’s Theo Rokos scores a game-high 20

points to lead the Sea Kings to their first league win in six tries. The

Sea Kings hand the Sailors their third straight loss. Newport is led by

Justin McIntee and his 19 points. CdM’s Doug Hesse scores 14 points,

including 7 of 10 from the foul line.

The top spot in the Golden State Athletic Conference belongs to

Vanguard University’s men’s basketball team. The Lions fight off visiting

Azusa Pacific, 97-83. Vanguard Coach Bill Reynolds calls on Keith

Randolph, who scores 16 points.

Kristen Bevis hits a running 13-footer with three seconds left to lift

the Lions’ women’s team to a 65-63 win over APU. Bevis scores a game-high

24 points.
