Girls basketball: Mesa comes through, 54-26
COSTA MESA - Ignited by a high-charged 27-point third quarter, the
Costa Mesa High girls basketball team marched past Pacific Coast League
visitor Laguna Beach, 54-26, Tuesday.
The Mustangs (8-12, 2-3 in the PCL) shot 9 of 19 in the third quarter,
hitting four three-pointers, two from senior Crystina Poncher (six
points), and sophomore Cassey Brick (seven points) and senior Christine
Caron (seven points) drained one each. Junior Rhondi Naff led Costa Mesa
with 16 points, while Caron and junior Rickell Reeves grabbed 10 rebounds
each and senior Jasmine Grewal collected eight boards. The Mustangs were
without senior Lauren Carich, who sprained her ankle in the 46-42 win
over Corona del Mar Thursday. Costa Mesa Coach Jim Weeks said Carich
could be ready for the playoffs, if the team qualifies for a spot.
Laguna Beach dropped to 0-5, 3-15.
The Mustangs return to PCL action Thursday at 7 p.m., hosting
University.
