The Estancia High boys basketball team holds off crosstown rival Costa
Mesa, 51-47, to record its 26th straight win over the Mustangs. Mesa has
four chances to tie the game in the final 1:30, but can not convert.
Estancia is led by Sam Nelson’s 15 points and nine rebounds, while
teammate Ryan Simpson has 12 points. Eagles point guard Selwyn Mansell
finishes with 10 points. Todd Hylton leads the Mustangs with nine points.
The Newport Harbor boys soccer team shuts out Back Bay rival Corona
del Mar, 2-0. Chris Wakim scores for the Sailors after a penalty kick
rebound from a sensational stop by CdM goalkeeper Ken Brown. Newport
senior Garrett Jansma, who does not touch a ball all week due to illness
and vomits on the field after the game, pokes an insurance goal high over
a hard-charging Brown. Newport goalkeeper Zach Wells finishes with four
saves.
The Costa Mesa girls basketball team digs out a 48-45 win over
Estancia. The game features 11 lead changes and 10 ties. Estancia
receives all of its scoring and all but two rebounds from its starting
five. Koo Kim leads the Mustangs with 12 points, while Chantay Peyton
adds 10. Estancia’s Vivi Rodriguez scores a game-high 15 points and Megan
McCartin helps the Eagles with 10 points.

The Newport Harbor High boys soccer team shoots down Back Bay rival
Corona del Mar, 2-1. The Sailors’ victory is an upset as CdM enters the
matchup ranked No. 2 in Orange County and No. 8 in the CIF Southern
Section Division 1-A. The Sailors gain goals from Jim Hicks, who scores
on a penalty kick, and Lewis Baker. CdM forward Bill Rimmer scores for
the Sea Kings with seven minutes left in the game.
The Estancia boys basketball team goes to its bread and butter to
escape with a 63-61 victory over Century. Matt Fuerbringer is the go-to
guy down the stretch, scoring 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Jim Faulkner contributes 12 points, while Russell King adds 13.
The Corona del Mar girls soccer team dominates Back Bay rival Newport
Harbor in a 5-0 win at the Sailors’ field. CdM’s Lisa Boatman scores a
hat trick, while Cheryl Williams and Cindy Scott add a goal each.
Goalkeepers Heather Warmington and Ali Havriluk combine for five saves to
post the shutout.
The Costa Mesa girls basketball team posts a 90-40 victory over Laguna
Beach. Olivia DiCamilli leads with 26 points and Heather Robinson scores
17, dishes out 10 assists, grabs seven rebounds and records five steals.
Yool Kim and Janet Ospina contribute 15 and 10 points, respectively.
