Every holiday season, Newport-Mesa residents never cease to amaze us

with their compassion and devotion and generosity toward those who are

less fortunate.

Whether it’s volunteering at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen or giving

to Share Our Selves, the senior centers, hospitals, churches or other

charitable agencies, those who call this slice of paradise home never

hesitate to do their part.

On behalf of those needy, mostly voiceless folks who have been offered

kindness this holiday season, we offer our thanks.

But we also want to offer up something else.

A reminder.

A reminder to all of you that while the rest of the country is

focusing on donations to those affected by the tragedies of Sept. 11,

some local charities have been left with less.

A reminder to not forget the smaller picture while looking at the

bigger, more devastating one.

A reminder that even though the holidays may pass, that doesn’t mean

the needs of others do too.

As most local charities and churches will tell you, the needy don’t

get holidays.

Just a reminder to keep them in mind as the year goes on.
