Jabberwalkies edge Blue Devils, 40-37

The one-two punch of Chris Debowski and Matt Derocili proved to be

enough for the Jabberwalkies to get by the Blue Devils, 40-37 last Sunday

in the first round of the the National Junior Basketball boys’ Division I

playoffs.

Debowski finished with a team-high 16 points to go along with three

steals. Derocili netted a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 10

rebounds, he also had three steals.

Jeff Millard and Tyler Killian (five steals) keyed a defensive effort

that allowed the Jabberwalkies to advance to the next round of the

playoffs.

In other games:

In another Divison I game the Jazz downed the Bruins, 67-41.

The Jazz, unbeaten during the regular season, opened postseason play

in big fashion, beating the Bruins by 26 points.

Jeremy Johnson lead three Jazz scorers in double figures with 32

points. Derek Kramer scored 14 and Jim Walker-Camarillo had 13.

Paul Walker-Camarillo and Vasken Keleshian each had four points.Sam

Anderson made some key defensive plays for the Jazz.

In Divison III action the Knicks topped the Lakers 39-27.

The Knicks outscored the Lakers, 16-5, in the final period to pull

away. Tyler Petry scored 14 points, Matt James scored six of his 10

points in the decisive quarter and Chase Barnes finished with 10 points.

With the win, the Knicks improved to 3-5.

In another Division III contest the Lakers coasted past the Barons,

47-25.

The Lakers bolted out to an early 29-5 lead and never looked back.

Lucas Vandeman scored nine points and added five rebounds and two steals,

Dan Rivera had five points to go along with five steals and Jan McNichol

and Anthony Digiancomo each had four rebounds.

In seventh grade All-Net action Fontain Valley No. 1 beat Newport Mesa

in a squeaker, 68-67.

Samer Haddad’s follow shot in the waning seconds lifted Fountain

Valley to the come-from-behind victory at Fountain Valley High.

Haddad, who led all scorers with 25 points also collected 11 rebounds.

He grabbed a rebound and got the winning shot off after teammate Dylan

Macdonald stole a Newport Mesa pass with 20 seconds to go and missed on a

driving layup. Vahe Mugerdich, a recent addition to the team, scored 14

points and had 12 rebounds. Brandon Duquette added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Fountain Valley No. 1, which trailed 38-24 at the half, improved to

2-6.
