Local swimmer Joshua Smith, a 5-year-old, won two events and also

set several marks at the recent South Coast Swim Conference 2000

Championships held at the Corona del Mar High pool.

Smith, swimming for the Green Valley swim team, won the 25-yard

breaststroke by more than a body’s length and also captured first place

in the 25-yard butterfly. In addition, he finished second overall (losing

out by 15/100 of a second) in the 25-yard freestyle.

During the meet, Joshua set the following meet records: most points

score in individual events in the 5-6 Age Division; youngest swimmer (5)

to receive highest individual points; youngest swimmer to win two

individual events and place second in another in meet’s history, and

broke the 25-yard Green Valley record with a time of 21.49.

Joshua’s sister, Tori, a 7-year-old competing in the 7-8 Age Division,

placed eighth overall in the 25-yard butterfly (and was the third fastest

among swimmers in her division), and was 10th in the 25-yard freestyle

(second fasted overall finisher in the 7-8 Division).
