ISSUE: NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD ASSN.

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The school board approved the district’s membership in the

National School Board Assn. 2000-01 Affiliate Program at its Tuesday

meeting. Membership will provide greater opportunity to expand the

board’s influence in shaping national education issues, including

legislation, policy and funding sources, officials said. Other benefits

include publications, online services, legislative alerts and updates,

and networking opportunities with other school board members across the

nation. The membership fees are $2,800.

ISSUE: COMMUNICATION RESOURCES

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board approved an agreement between the district and

Communication Resources for Schools for assistance and services on public

relations projects.

The district requires frequent and effective communication with

parents and other community members, as well as staff, officials said.

The firm has assisted staff members for the past two years with special

projects such as newsletters to parents and publications.

The services cost $75 per hour for graphics and $150 per hour for consulting, plus actual expenses.

ISSUE: SPANISH TEXTBOOKS

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board agreed to adopt supplemental instruction materials

for seventh- and eighth-grade students in elective Spanish classes at

Dwyer and Sowers middle schools. The materials are needed to align the

schools with Spanish classes at Edison and Huntington Beach high schools.

ISSUE: INCENTIVE PROGRAM

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board approved a resolution that ensures the district has

complied with requirements for students’ textbooks. The district must be

in compliance before it can receive funding for the Pupil Textbook and

Instructional Materials Incentive Program.
