HUNTINGTON BEACH -- More than once, Dave Garofalo has publicly stated

that he gets only $175 a month for serving as mayor.

But city records show that with benefits and other allowances, the

mayor actually has a total compensation package of nearly $25,000 a year.

In addition to his monthly pay of $175, Garofalo receives a

miscellaneous authorized expense allowance of $1,297 each month, which

adds up to $15,564 a year in financial compensation, said Jim Lewis, the

city’s senior budget analyst.

In total, Garofalo can receive a cash sum of up to $17,664 each year Additionally, Garofalo is covered for health benefits, which the city

pays in an additional allotment per month.

Here’s the rundown:

* medical insurance -- $485 a month or $5,820 a year;

* dental insurance -- $100 a month or $1,200 a year;

* life insurance -- $15 a month or $180 a year.

When those figures are added up, that number climbs to $7,200 each

year. When all is considered, the city pays out $24,864 a year to the
