Women’s tennis: Davenport seeded No. 2 for U.S. Open
WHITE PLAINS, New York - Palisades Tennis Club’s Lindsay Davenport
was seeded No. 2 for next week’s U.S. Open, behind 1997 winner Martina
Hingis.
Davenport, the U.S. Open champ in 1998, is seeded No. 2 for the third
year in a row, while Wimbledon champ Venus Williams is seeded No. 3 for
the second year in a row.
Reigning French Open champion Mary Pierce and defending U.S. Open
champ Serena Williams round out this year’s top-five.
In addition to her U.S. Open crown in 1998, Davenport has also won the
Australian Open in January and Wimbledon in 1999. She needs only the
French Open to complete her career Grand Slam.
The seedings were made directly from the Aug. 21 Sanex WTA Tour rankings and ATP Tour Entry System.
