NEWPORT-MESA SCHOOL BOARD PREVIEW

ENERGY EDUCATION

Energy Education Inc. is a company offering an energy management

program specifically designed to help school systems regulate energy

consumption and save money. A presentation was originally made to the

school board in June.

What to expect: Representatives from Energy Education will make a

second presentation tonight to provide more details of their program for

the school board’s consideration. District officials said there is no

risk and that the company guarantees savings.

GATE PROGRAM LOOKS FOR FUNDING

The state’s Gifted and Talented program (GATE), run for the district

by Davis Education Center principal Cheryl Galloway, is up for

reapplication. To receive funding, the state education code requires the

school board to submit an application to the state Board of Education.

What to expect: Galloway, who has spent a year and a half redesigning

the program to meet state requirements, has completed the application

with the input of the program’s students and parents. She will present it

to the school board, which will consider approving the application.

ANOTHER DIGITAL HIGH SCHOOL

In April, the state Department of Education announced that Monte Vista

High School was selected for the Digital High School Program. So far in

Newport-Mesa, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Estancia and Newport Harbor

high schools have already become digital high schools. Before a school

can enter the program, the school board must certify that a majority of

the school’s staff supports the program.

What to expect: Based on a survey conducted by the school, the school

board will consider certifying that a majority of the staff is behind the

program.

BUDGET MEETING

The final budget for the school district is to be considered for

approval Sept. 5.

What to expect: The school board and district officials will conduct a

daylong study session Thursday to discuss the budget. The meeting will

begin at 8 a.m. in the district board room and go as long as necessary.
