SANDCASTLES: The Commodores Club of the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of

Commerce is seeking families, youth groups, community clubs and

businesses who would like to build a sandcastle at the 39th annual event

being held Sept. 10 at Big Corona. I have visited sandcastle contests all

along the Pacific Coast, from Vancouver, B.C. to San Diego, but none are

finer than the one sponsored by the Commodores Club.

Thanks to Commodore Bob Black, each person who participates on a

sandcastle team will receive a free round-trip ticket to Catalina aboard

the Catalina Flyer. The Daily Pilot, Land Rover and Pacific Bell are the

major sponsors of the event, which draws thousands of visitors to the

beach for an end-of-the-summer tradition. To enter a group in the

sandcastle competition, contact Dan Hamilton at (714) 972-4972 or Karin

Graves at (949) 729-4414.

SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION: Syd Lucas of the Newport Beach Sunrise

Rotary Club introduced Bret Spaulding and Samantha Tierneo, who joined

the club at their breakfast meeting. Spaulding and Tierneo will begin

their first semester at Orange Coast College later this month and each

received a check for $500 to assist them with college-related expenses.

CLUB NEWS: Members of the Newport Beach-Corona del Mar Kiwanis Club

gave Tina Hoover, a key figure in the success and structure of their

recent Pacific Coast Triathlon, a standing ovation at a recent meeting

for the time and talent she gave to the event. Jack Rippy, the club

president, presented Hoover with a Distinguished Secretary pin for her

role in the club this past year, while Joel Carlson received the IDD

Award pin and Barrett Westover received his Distinguished President’s

pin.
