Costa Mesa’s boys water polo team wins its third consecutive summer

tournament by hammering Esperanza, 12-4, in the finals of the Firecracker

Invitational. Sean Hylton scores five goals for the Mustangs. In the

first round, Mesa beats Corona del Mar, 18-4, to defeat the Sea Kings for

the first time in 14 years.

Newport East Little League All-Star baseball team opens Division 55

Tournament play with a 15-3 blowout over Aliso Viejo. Winning pitcher

Josh Bradbury goes 4 for 4 at the plate.

Ten years ago

Newport Aquatic Center’s junior women’s crew takes fifth place at the

U.S. Rowing National Championship Regatta. It is the first national medal

in NAC history, which was led by a silver medal from its quadruple scull

of Heidi Schetter, Kristen Croteau, Jeanne Garrison and Anne Phillippi.

Steve Kidwell wins a gold medal for billiards at the National Veterans

wheelchair games.

Baseball legend Mickey Mantle is inducted into the Balboa Bay Club Hall

of Fame.
