Newport wins Carson City tournament
CARSON CITY - Behind Dustin Illingworth’s 31 points, Newport Harbor
High’s boys basketball team won the Carson City Capitol Classic with a
tough 61-59 overtime upset over Sacramento powerhouse Kennedy.
The Sailors (11-4) took a 12-point halftime lead before Kennedy chipped
away and sent the game into overtime. But the Cougars (15-1) could not
avoid its first loss.
“It was just a war,” Newport Harbor Coach Larry Hirst said. “They’re
players were attacking, and they were aggressive.”
Illingworth’s performance solidified his tournament MVP award. Aaron
Yarnal was named the tournament’s outstanding defensive player, and
sophomore Tony Melum was also named to the All-tournament team.
Only six players played for Newport in the tightly-contested battle.
“Our bench played well for us in the last two games,” Hirst said. “This
was an opportunity for our starters to give back to them and take us the
rest of the way.”
