MAILBAG - Dec. 16, 1999
Thank you for the story on our tree-lighting ceremony Sunday at Crystal
Cove (“The party that almost wasn’t,” Dec. 13).
I would like to clear up the impression the story gave, by stating that
the Alliance to Rescue Crystal Cove does not represent the residents of
Crystal Cove.
For the past four years, I have given a Christmas party at Crystal Cove,
where I have been a lifetime resident.
This year I chose to combine that party with a fund-raiser for the
Alliance to Rescue Crystal Cove, by selling Christmas decorations before
and at the party to support the alliance. Everyone is entitled to their
opinion about the future of Crystal Cove.
The Alliance to Rescue Crystal Cove wants to ensure that the biological
significance of Crystal Cove State Park, its beach and the Irvine Coast
Marine Life Refuge area is preserved, maintained and utilized to the
optimum benefit of the people of the state.
The agreement made by the residents of Crystal Cove and the California
State Parks, to vacate, is only an issue between those parties. This
agreement has been finalized and the residents will be notified when
their leases have been concluded.
Sunday evening’s gathering celebrated Christmas and the caring of all
those who hold Crystal Cove dear. The Christmas tree is a symbol of our
belief, a yearly renewal, expressing the promise of hope to mankind.
Merry Christmas.

Congrats to Newport Harbor for win over Irvine
Congratulations to football Coach Jeff Brinkley and the Sailor players
for their gritty come-from-behind win over Irvine (“Victory!” Dec. 11). I
hope there is some truth to the rumor that the home town of the winning
team gets to pick the site of the new Orange County Airport! Thank you.

Face the facts: No El Toro means bigger John Wayne
If the El Toro airport is not built, John Wayne Airport will be expanded.
If there’s anyone out there who does not believe this, then you need to
do a bit more research. The John Wayne expansion plans are already drawn
and will be implemented. If you live in Santa Ana Heights, you will lose
your home in order for John Wayne to be expanded. This will not happen in
El Toro, due to the large buffer in existence at the proposed El Toro
airport site. Everyone needs to join this battle to prevent a John Wayne
expansion. Santa Ana Heights is being rapidly rezoned for commercial
development, destroying our homes and community.
Where is our representation with the Orange County Board of Supervisors?
Certainly not with Tom Wilson. I have yet to see anything from Wilson
that indicates he is concerned about this issue, but I certainly see many
printed items quoting Wilson’s strong opposition to the El Toro Airport.
Should he still be our representative on the Board of Supervisors? I
think not.
