Newport Harbor - Safety Billy Clayton jumped a curl pattern to intercept
on Kennedy’s third play, then combined with cornerback Andre Stewart to
nearly get a second interception on the second defensive series ... End
Garrett Troncale stuffed an Irish runner for a 2-yard loss and later
recorded the first of three sacks for a 9-yard loss ... Safety Dayne
Pfaff broke up a pass early in the fourth defensive series, then ended
Kennedy’s best scoring threat by picking off a halfback pass at his own
2-yard line and returning it 24 yards ... Middle linebacker Alan Saenz
had a near-interception between Pfaff’s aforementioned plays ...
Pass-rush specialist Brad Rothwell got the first of his two sacks in the
final moments of the first half and later recovered a fumble ...
Cornerback Justin Jacobs had perfect position on a deep sideline pattern
to break up a long pass attempt ... Outside linebacker Chris Manderino
snatched a floating pass in the flat and raced 78 yards for a touchdown,
as nose guard Andy Kalanz ran interference, to end Kennedy’s first
second-half possession ... Sophomore Joe Foley recovered a fumble on
kickoff coverage to help Harbor possess the ball all but 2:16 of the
final 19:30.

Big defensive plays vs. Irvine
Newport Harbor - End Garrett Troncale had two official sacks, the second
of which he popped the ball loose, allowing nose guard Andy Kalanz to
scoop it up and return it 4 yards for the game-winning touchdown. He
added another sack to foil a two-point conversion ... Kalanz also had a
sack ... Cornerback Kelsey Peterson had two late interceptions to protect
the lead. He also recovered a fumble to set up a field goal and had a
sack ... Outside linebacker Mike Tunney stuffed a run for a 2-yard loss
... Outside linebacker Chris Manderino made a tackle for no gain ... End
Nick Langsdorf forced the fumble Peterson recovered on the first play
after halftime and later batted down a pass attempt at the line ...
Middle linebacker Alan Saenz nailed the ballcarrier for no gain late in
the game ... Safety Billy Clayton intercepted one pass, nearly picked off
another, and deflected one Peterson picked off to foil Irvine’s
fourth-quarter comeback attempts.
