Football: OCC players honored at team banquet

COSTA MESA - Orange Coast College quarterback Jared Flint was named

the Pirates’ Most Valuable Player at the team’s annual awards banquet

Thursday.

Flint threw for 2,458 yards and 16 touchdowns and was the first Pirate

in the school’s 52-year history to throw for over 4,000 yards in a

career.

Defensive back Bobby Johnson, who led the team with 98 tackles and a

pair of interceptions was honored as the Bill Jenkins Hitter of the Year.

The award is named for a former OCC football and baseball standout in the

late 1960s who, before transferring to USC in 1969, was killed in an

automobile accident.

Offensive lineman Amara Dunzo was a recipient of Coast’s first-ever

Scholar Athlete Award, while defensive back Johnnie Peeples was selected

as the team’s Outstanding Defensive Back after breaking up 13 passes and

intercepting another.

Running back Raymond Ohrel (Newport Harbor High), who gained 336 yards

on the ground and set a team record 63 receptions, as named OCC’s

Outstanding Back, while receiver David Castleton, who caught 53 passes

for a team-high 958 yards claimed Outstanding Receiver honors.

Jesse Chagolla (offense) and James Guglielmana (defense) each picked

up Outstanding Linemen awards, while Dustin Davis was named the team’s

Outstanding Linebacker.

Freshman Eddie Johnson (Newport Harbor), already the sixth-leading

career punter in OCC’s history won the Special Teams Award, while Justin

Blackard won the team’s Most Improved Award.
