Newport wins Villa Park Tournament
VILLA PARK - Newport Harbor High’s girls water polo team won
another championship with a 10-7 victory over Carlsbad on Saturday, thus
capturing the Villa Park Tournament Championship.
Kyndra Cox, who was named MVP of the tournament, scored six goals for the
Sailors. Katherine Belden, also selected to the all-tournament team,
scored one, and Jenna Murphy scored twice. Carlsbad made a determined
comeback in the second half, but Heather Deyden, with 10 saves, kept
Carlsbad from moving ahead.
To get to the finals, Newport defeated host Villa Park, 4-2. Cox scored
twice, and Murphy and Ali Taylor each added one goal for the Sailors, who
are now 4-1.
