CdM can’t catch up

WESTMINSTER - Corona del Mar High’s boys basketball team not only
had to face Santa Ana Calvary Chapel in Saturday’s third-place game of
the La Quinta Tournament, it had to do it with a slight handicap.
CdM’s Kevin Hansen played almost the entire game despite being so sick
that his coach, Paul Orris, said he should barely have played. To make
matters worse, Joel Templeton sprained his ankle in the fourth quarter,
leaving CdM even more short-handed for the end of the game.
And the Eagles were more than willing to take advantage, hitting 12-of-23
field goal attempts in the second half to win, 56-48.
CdM had a 14-9 after the first quarter. But the Calvary Chapel shooting
percentage went up from that point.
“We were supposed to do some things, like play better D,” CdM Coach Paul
Orris said. “We got to go back to the basics.”
Calvary Chapel took the lead for the first time in the game 33 seconds
before halftime with a three-pointer from Torin Beeler. The Eagles closed
out that quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 22-20 lead into halftime.
In the second half, CdM (4-2) came out firing, with Alec Hanson hitting a
jumper to tie the game. But Beeler immediately followed with a three to
take back the lead.
Both teams shot 7-for-14 in the third quarter, with CdM closing the lead
to one. Hanson ended up with three three-pointers in the second half to
keep CdM afloat.
Hanson hit his last three-pointer on CdM’s first possession in the
fourth, and it tied the game. But the Eagles’ Bryan Filkey and Josh
Sherman combined for an 11-0 run. The Sea Kings finally ended the streak
when Hansen hit a jumper with three minutes left in the game, and CdM was
down by nine points.
But CdM wasn’t through. Hansen hit another jumper and Brooks Morris,
named to the all-tournament team, got two layups for CdM to close the
game to three points. But Calvary Chapel point guard Isiah Barney hit a
three-pointer with 38 seconds left to clinch the outcome for the Eagles.
Besides the 52 % shooting percentage in the second half, the Eagles hit
all three of their three-point attempts in a 34-point half. It was a
team effort, with eight Calvary Chapel players scoring.
For CdM, Hansen still scored 10 points, flu bug and all. Morris also
finished with 10 points. Hanson had 15 points, 11 in the second half, for
the Sea Kings. Elliott Patterson had six points and six rebounds off the
bench.
