Midget Jaguars to play for title
Doug DeLong caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyle
Feiler with four seconds remaining Saturday to lift the Fountain Valley
Jr. Midget Jaguars to a 22-14 victory over the Garden Grove Panthers and
into the AFL championship game.
DeLong’s ran a post pattern to make his winning catch, which came on
fourth down.
It was the second scoring pass of the game for DeLong, who had a 20-yard
touchdown reception in the first quarter to put Fountain Valley (7-0-2)
on top, 14-7.
Garden Grove (6-4) scored consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter to
open up a 14-7 lead, but the Jaguars drew even at the half when Feiler
threw 12 yards to Joey Vasquez for the tying touchdown.
The touchdown catch was the first of Vasquez’s career.
Vasquez also came up with the big defensive play of the game for Fountain
Valley with a third quarter interception, thwarting a Garden Grove
scoring drive at the Jaguar one-yard line.
Fountain Valley’s game-winning drive started with six minutes left in the
game. During the march, Bob Silva rushed for 30 yards and Feiler
completed passes of 10, 15, and 20 yards, the latter to DeLong which put
the ball at the Garden Grove 15-yard line with 28 seconds remaining.
Feiler finished the game 8 of 18 for 91 yards and three touchdowns. Silva
rushed for 59 yards on 12 carries and also had 19 yards in pass receptions, DeLong rushed for 37 yards on nine attempts and had pass
receptions total 60 yards with two touchdowns, and Ray Andong rushed for
54 yards on 10 carries.
The Jaguar defense was led by Michael Musso, Bryan Reihm, Andong, DeLong,
and Silva, with Vasquez, David Patterson, and Brian Selleck playing
solidly along the front line.
The Fountain Valley Jaguars will play the Tustin Cobras Saturday in the
AFL championship game, beginning at 7 p.m. at South Gate High.
