Newport Harbor No. 2 in water polo, tennis

NEWPORT BEACH - In boys water polo, Newport Harbor High and Corona

del Mar each grabbed the No. 2 seed in their respective divisions for the

CIF Southern Section playoffs.The Sailors, (25-2, 3-0 in league) are

three-time defending Sea View League champions and will open the

Division I playoffs at home Thursday against Millikan High’s Rams of Long

Beach.

As expected, Long Beach Wilson, the only Southern Section team to beat

Newport Harbor this year, is the No. 1 seed.

“Our kids aren’t looking ahead to a 1-2 matchup,” Newport Harbor Co-Coach

Brian Kreutzkamp said. “Last year, we lost to Foothill in the second

round, and we were No. 2 while they were No. 7. Hopefully, they learned a

lesson.”

CdM, (14-9, 4-0) which won the Pacific Coast League, is the No. 2 seed in

the Division II playoffs and will host Sunset League representative

Edison Friday in a first-round game.

Servite, which defeated CdM earlier in the season, is the No. 1 seed in

the Division II tournament.

In girls tennis, Newport Harbor got a No. 2 seed in the Division I

playoffs, which also include CdM.

Newport Harbor (15-1, 10-0), champion of the Sea View League, will open

Thursday by hosting the winner of today’s Glendora-San Gabriel wild-card

match.

CdM (14-5, 10-0) which won the PCL, will play Tuesday’s Victor

Valley-A.B. Miller winner Thursday at home.

Perennial power and defending CIF Division I champion Peninsula, which

handed Newport Harbor its only loss, is the No. 1 seed.

“Peninsula and Harbor are definitely the teams to beat,” CdM Coach Andy

Stewart said. “We have to play well to beat them. (No. 3 seed) Dana Hills

is almost as good, but we can match up with them. But Peninsula and

Harbor might be too much.”
