After working on patrol, Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Janet Perez said

she is having a difficult time adjusting to her new role as the

department’s public information officer. Public relations is a far cry

from catching bad guys, she said.

To help her transition, Perez did pick up a few helpful tips about City

Council meetings, notorious for dragging on forever and often

degenerating into absurdity:

“Not to yawn too much, not to roll my eyes and not to laugh,” she said.

Slugging it out

Huntington Beach students Huy Dang and Katy Jones are locked in two

academic contests. Both are tied for the No. 1 ranking in their class at

Marina High School. The two scholars are also competing for National

Merit Scholars semifinal rankings.

Fountain Valley Councilman Larry Crandall attended last weekend’s Special

Olympics at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center and was so impressed by

the skill and spirit of the 820 participants that he decided to get their

autographs.

“I asked them to sign a baseball for me, and they were surprised,” he

said. But the athlete’s bashfulness didn’t last long. Crandall collected

about 50 signatures. His favorite? Stan “The Man” Stewart.
