MILLENNIUM MOMENT

Arsene Gadarian was known both as a boatyard operator and as a local

gadfly, a man who was never shy about letting civic leaders on both sides

of the political spectrum know his opinions.

Gadarian ran Blackie’s Boat Yard for 23 years, once putting up a

tremendous fight when federal officials attempted to levy a $15 fine on

the business. Gadarian had little patience for such petty politicking and

was happy to criticize the civil servants who indulged in it.

In 1979, Gadarian moved to Lahaina, Hawaii, promising to treat officials

to the same cantankerous spirit.

* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
