CONNECTIONS ‘99: Some 100 local businesses and a few service clubs

will participate in Tuesday’s business networking event, “Connections

‘99,” which will be held at the Balboa Bay Club from 5 to 8 p.m. Business

and community leaders and residents will enjoy a networking opportunity,

hors d’oeuvres, no-host cocktails and door prizes.

Karin Graves, special events coordinator for the Newport Harbor Chamber

of Commerce, says a variety of businesses including banks, accountants,

credit unions, clothing stores, Mighty Ducks, hotels, attorneys,

hairstylists, fitness centers and a service club or two will share

tabletop displays to promote their activities. “Connections ‘99” is a

good opportunity to learn more about your community and meet business and

community leaders.

Due to limited parking at the Bay Club, a free shuttle will be provided

from the Newport Harbor Lutheran Church. Free admission coupons can be

SWING ‘N DIXIE IN SUN VALLEY: The Mike McCaffrey Trio, a Tuesday

night staple at the Balboa Bay Club’s Shell Bar, accepted an invitation

to play at the 10th annual Sun Valley Swing’n’Dixie Jazz Jamboree, Oct.

13-17. The Mike McCaffrey Trio joins 23 other top jazz bands from as far

away as France and Germany at the jazz music festival, which has a

worldwide reputation. “It is quite an honor to be asked to play at this

festival,” said McCaffrey, who has attended the event in the past. He

added that it’s hard to find a hotel room since the jamboree usually

sells out four to five months before the music begins. You don’t have to

go to Sun Valley to hear the Mike McCaffrey Trio; you can check them out

at the Balboa Bay Club on Tuesdays beginning at 6:30 p.m.

LIONS TO VISIT ENSENADA: Members of the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor,

Harbor Mesa and Newport Beach Lions clubs will join with other Lions

clubs from 4L4 District to visit Lions clubs in Ensenada, Oct. 21-24.

Activities for the weekend include golfing at Baja Mar, a reception at

the San Nicolas Hotel, a visit to an elementary school, tour of the wine

country in Guadeloupe Valley, deep sea fishing, tour of the new Lions Eye

Clinic and the Grand Ball of Friendship with local Lions clubs.

ROTARIAN RETIRES: With 57 years of perfect attendance and at the

age of 88, Rotarian Norm Corlett retired from active membership in the

Newport-Irvine Rotary Club. Corlett served as president of the clubs in

Burlingame in 1947-48, San Francisco in 1971-72 and Newport-Irvine in

1988-89. Corlett had few words to say when announcing his retirement at a

recent club meeting: “At 88, when you’re nine years older then the pope,

a man has reached a state of fulfillment, of difference, of dignity,

veneration and don’t you ever forget that!” Corlett received a standing

ovation from the membership in recognition of his years of service and

contributions to the world of Rotary. He was given Honorary Member status

in the club by president John Brainerd.

WEDNESDAY -- 7:15 a.m.: The South Coast Metro Rotary Club will meet

at the Center Club. Newport Harbor Kiwanis Club meets at the University

Athletic Club. Noon: The Exchange Club of Orange Coast meets at the Bahia

Corinthian Yacht Club. 6 p.m.: The Newport Balboa Rotary meets at the

Bahia Corinthian Yacht for a craft talk by member Roger Gilbert.

THURSDAY -- 7 a.m.: The Costa Mesa Orange Coast Breakfast Lions

Club meets at Mimi’s Cafe. Noon: Kiwanis Club of Newport Beach-Corona del

Mar meets at the Bahia. The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor meets at the

Riverboat to hear Kathy McCarrell speak about programs at the child abuse

prevention center. The Newport-Irvine Rotary Club meets at the Irvine

Marriott for a “bragging rights” program chaired by Vicki Heston Lott.

The Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club meets at the Holiday Inn to hear Pepe

Montenegro, Gang Outreach coordinator for the Newport-Mesa school

district.
