Registered nurse Marjorie “Kelly” Ludwig strived to make the young

patients she assisted at Hoag Hospital feel their best.

Whether she put a puppet on her hand or dressed as a clown, Ludwig did

all she could to help the children in the pediatric unit feel as

comfortable as possible.

Ludwig, who joined the hospital staff shortly after it opened in 1952,

went on the be a supervisor of several departments before taking over as

pediatric supervisor in 1960.

Ludwig said the key to being a good nurse is having the ability to

understand what a child is feeling. She said it was very rewarding to

watch the sick make a recovery.

“The neatest thing is to watch that happy face going out the door and

going home.” she said.

MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who made a major contribution to

the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
