Baseball: Harper selected to South All-State team
Tony Altobelli
CORONA DEL MAR - Ty Harper may be a freshman at Golden West
College, but he is still reaping the rewards from a stellar 1999 baseball
season and career at Corona del Mar High.
Harper was one of 20 seniors selected to the 1999 California Baseball
Coaches Association’s South All-State Team.
Seniors from the San Diego, Southern and Los Angeles Sections were
eligible for this team that represents over 600 Southern California high
school baseball teams fielded in the 1999 season.
Harper’s South All-State selection puts a closure on a stellar prep
career at CdM.
The three-time All-CIF selection batted .505 with 12 home runs and 37
RBIs as a leadoff hitter for the Division IV champion Sea Kings.
His 12 home runs tied teammate Eric Wiethorn for the school and district
single-season record.
As a pitcher for CdM, Harper was equally effective, going 7-1 with two
saves and a 2.81 ERA.
In his three-year varsity career, Harper finished with a .514 career
batting average, 54 extra-base hits, 90 runs scored as well as a 9-4
pitching record with four saves and a 3.04 ERA in 110 2/3 total innings.
The players were selected from nominations submitted by their respective
CBCA member coaches in the three CIF Sections that comprise the South
region.
