Arrest made after man with knife is reported barricaded in Costa Mesa motel, police say

Costa Mesa police said Tuesday night that an arrest had been made hours after a report of a barricaded armed man drew crisis negotiators and SWAT officers to a Costa Mesa motel.

The Police Department tweeted at about 7 p.m. that the incident had ended at the Regency Inn at 2544 Newport Blvd.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital to be treated for self-inflicted wounds, police spokeswoman Roxi Fyad said.

Police did not immediately release further details.

An initial report came in at 1:37 p.m. that a man armed with a knife and making suicide threats had barricaded himself in a room on the first floor of the motel, police said.

Smoke was seen coming from the room, but no fire, police said. The Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue Department went to the scene.

The motel was evacuated as a precaution.

Parts of Newport Boulevard were closed to traffic, and police advised motorists to avoid the area. All road closures around the motel were lifted around 7:45 p.m., police said.
