Students with perfect ACT, SAT scores among 100 honored at Newport-Mesa ceremony
About 100 students in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, some of whom earned a perfect score on the ACT or SAT exams, were honored during an awards ceremony last week at the Corona del Mar High School Performing Arts Center in Newport Beach.
Students who achieved a perfect score on the ACT are Newport Harbor High School senior Baylee Bakkila and Corona del Mar High School seniors Shane Gooding and Matthew Paragas and junior Abigail Peterson.
Corona del Mar senior Hikaru Masuda got a perfect score on the SAT.
Seventeen sophomores were acknowledged for their designation in the Simon Scholars Program under the San Clemente-based Simon Family Foundation.

Simon Scholars is a six-year program that begins in the summer before students’ junior year in high school and continues through college, offering college application assistance, SAT and ACT preparation courses and life skills training. High school graduates in the program are granted a $16,000 college scholarship.
Twelve students were recognized as AP Scholars after passing three or more Advanced Placement tests with a score of 3 or better. Those students will get a special seal on their diplomas.
Other students received awards including the Dr. Robert Charles Francy Science Scholarship, the John W. Nicoll Scholarship for Future Teachers and Girl Scout Gold and Eagle Scout recognitions.
Newport-Mesa has 1,669 seniors graduating from high school this month. All together, they are receiving more than $2.5 million in college scholarships and grants.
