German man falls 30 feet off cliff
A German family visiting Newport Beach that planned to return home Saturday will have to stay in town a bit longer after the father fell off a cliff at Lookout Point in Corona del Mar.
The man, in his late 20s, dropped about 30 feet to the sand below at Pirate’s Cove, breaking his leg, among other injuries, authorities said. He was there with his wife and child, officials said.
Firefighters put the tourist on a backboard and loaded him onto a sheriff’s harbor patrol boat waiting in the water, expediting his rescue. Paramedics picked him up at the harbor patrol dock and took him to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.
Depending on the circumstances, injured patients in areas like Pirate’s Cove are put on a boat to be picked up at the docks because it’s easier and faster than lifting them up a cliff, officials said.
