COSTA MESA — A man suffered stab wounds during an attempted robbery early Tuesday morning in Costa Mesa, police said.

The 39-year-old man was walking alone in the 1900 block of Whittier Avenue about 1 a.m. when two suspects approached him and asked for money, said Costa Mesa Lt. Rob Sharpnack.

When the man refused, the two suspects surrounded him and began demanding money, police said. A fight ensued and the victim sustained a stab wound in his lower torso, according to police reports.

The injured man walked into Hoag Hospital and was then taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment and released, Sharpnack said. The stab wound was not life-threatening.

Police said the suspects were described as Hispanic males in their early 20s, wearing T-shirts and long shorts.
