Surfer taken to Hoag after possible seizure

A surfer who appeared to be having a seizure while in Newport Beach waters was rescued by lifeguards and taken to a hospital Friday, the Fire Department said in a news release.

Other surfers reported seeing a man having difficulty in the water and possibly having a seizure, so they pulled him on a board and paddled him to shore where lifeguards assisted the man out of the water, said Ron Gamble, of the Newport Beach Fire Department.

Lifeguards began providing basic medical care to the man, who was unconscious at the time, the Fire Department said in a news release.

Firefighters arrived on scene and began advanced emergency medical care on the man, who was still unconscious but breathing, before taking him to Hoag Hospital.

The incident occurred about 7:16 a.m. north of the Newport Beach Pier, near 26th Street on the Balboa Peninsula, according to the release.

Paramedics arrived with the man at Hoag Hospital at 7:39 a.m., with no change in the man’s health.
