Bicyclist injured in possible DUI crash involving 3 vehicles in H.B.; Costa Mesa man arrested

A 22-year-old bicyclist from Huntington Beach suffered moderate injuries Sunday and was taken to a hospital for treatment after being struck by a vehicle that Huntington Beach police suspect was driven by a man under the influence of alcohol.

Just before 4 p.m., police responded to a report of a traffic collision on Bushard Street near Indianapolis Avenue.

The crash, involving three vehicles and a bicycle, occurred after a vehicle turned onto Bushard “at a high rate of speed and the driver lost control,” Officer Angela Bennett said Monday.

The vehicle struck a bicycle and then collided with two other vehicles, police said.

The driver “had objective symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol” and was arrested at the scene, Bennett said in a statement.

The suspect, Evan Gray-Sweeney, 23, of Costa Mesa, was taken to a hospital and medically cleared before being booked at Huntington Beach city jail on suspicion of DUI causing bodily injury, police said. His bail was set at $100,000, Bennett said. He was later released on bond, police said.
